Anchor Bolt Design Guide- Material Type Selection Criteria

Some of Projects officers are not familiar with the selection criteria for Anchor bolt material types, most probably they are selecting or deciding without a solid basis of knowledge in the area of application needs, Anchor material type, design conditions, requirements, and budgeted costs, while you will be able to decide which material you have to use in your concerned Anchor properly; Zinc plated, Galvanized, Hot dip galvanized, Stainless steel, or Coated, and so on. If you consider some main points starting from understanding the criteria selection of Anchor material type and some other points that play a vital role in anchor material selection, as follows: 

1. Strength/Tensile requirements.

2. Exposure Factor; Is the anchor encased or exposed to the elements?
3. Elements Contact; What elements will the anchor contact? 
4. Anchor limitations; What limitations are present, affecting the material? 


Regarding Strength requirements, the Anchor bolts, unless a special corrosive environment exists, the following should be specified:
A. For low- to moderate-strength requirements:
ASTM A307 headed bolts, ASTM A36 rods, or ASTM F1554 grade 36 rods.

B. For higher strength requirements:
ASTM A193 grade B7, ASTM F1554 grade 55 or grade 105, or ASTM A354 grade BC or grade BD.


Stainless steel Anchors are a costly option, and may be required in some environments, but not at all. Also, painting or coating the anchor will protect your anchor to some extent, but more maintenance may be required later on. So, material type selection shall be studied and justified scientifically and properly not on a market-common or personal beliefs basis.


Furthermore, having a good knowledge of international and local codes/standards requirements for the Anchor material types, is a must, as an example, The ASTM-A-193 mentioned above, which is used in higher temperature Applications, cannot be galvanized.


While regarding the other points of material selection criteria; Exposure Factor, Elements Contact, and Anchor limitations have to be studied based on the case.

If you perform the above practice, your selection will be proofed and proper, otherwise, you just increase the costs and affect the project time frame without real Engineering-Wise reasons.
