Storefront or Shopfront is not a specific material-restricted word in AEC, it does not relate to the fully glazed elevation spanned to the ground floor only, the terminology has been used before with different materials and various designs before being used commonly to the fully glazed street-level sightline elevations of commercial buildings.
Generally, the main benefits of storefronts are enhancing the aesthetics and usefulness of commercial building elevations, besides attracting the attention of passersby to the space inside.
Integrate the storefront concept with the cutting-edge Glazed Façade systems has created a good space for the Architects and Designers, to boost the needs of building owners and investors, as the transparent glazing gives onlookers a sight inside, and attracts them to the display, also the integration has led to maximize the natural lights of external envelope and link to some extent the external environment with the spaces inside, and by the way, this is one of Frank Lloyd Wright (Well Known American Architect) Design principles.
Presently, we have in the market several options for storefront systems, which can be used either externally or internally, these systems in external applications are typically suited for low-rise buildings (up to four stories maximum/Single span only) due to the loads constraints. Storefront systems are assembled in the field usually, but factory-assembled pre-glazed storefront systems are also available through some providers.
